John Seale ACS ASCAnother photo opportunity sometime in the nineties after John showed his latest film to the ACS Vic members with a fabulous Q & A afterwards. I think the film was ‘The English Patient’. I remember him saying he shot the whole film on 500 ASA stock including in the desert. He won an Oscar for this film.

I bought a Cinema Products CP16 off ACS member Steve Thompson and almost immediately put it into action on this ultra low budget feature. A long time later I found out that CP16 also belonged to cinematographer David Rose who I assisted for many years.As you can see I upgraded to the Spectra Cine IV incident meter upon the advice of the late great mentor to many in our industry, Lemac’s founder John Bowring ACS.

We compared the LF Signature Primes with other modern and vintage lenses. It was very interesting to compare the edge sharpness, light loss on the edges through the focus and chromatic aberrations on the older lenses.

The rear rings can hold nets or even diopters to help recreate vintage looks with a perfect lens to start off with. A much better technical and aesthetic result going this way than using older lenser with less advanced optics for todays digital sensors.

Using Hedge, Angelbird SD card readers, NVME SSD’s and new 16” M1 MacBook pro makes the task less daunting. Care and organisation are still paramount.
